Capitaland Chorus ![]()
Marianne Shoen Hunter, Director Capitaland Chorus was chartered in October, 1977, as the Latham Circle Chapter of Sweet Adelines International, with only 20 members. Over the years, our membership has increased from a handful of local women to a diverse group of women of all ages with varying interests, backgrounds, and occupations, who live and work in several counties in and around the Capital District. Due to this expansion, the chorus changed its name to Capitaland Chorus.
A member of Sweet Adeline's Region 16, each spring we compete in Syracuse, NY, with more than two dozen choruses from Western and Upstate New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. Capitaland placed in the top five in this regional competition several times, capturing first place medals in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2004. These achievements allowed us to compete with other regional champions from all around the world at the Sweet Adelines International Competitions held in Salt Lake City in 1997, Orlando, Florida in 2000, Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 and Detroit, Michigan in 2005!
In the 2007 contest, Capitaland took highest honors in the AA category - medium size choruses. This accomplishment allowed us to compete at the 2008 Harmony Classic, at the International Education Symposium, held in San Antonio, TX, where we placed fourth in the world.
Education is of prime importance to Sweet Adelines and Capitaland Chorus. This goal is achieved through international-level coaches and faculty who train us in vocal production, choreography, and showmanship. Several coaching sessions are scheduled in 2012 and beyond. A weekend retreat for the Director and chorus members was a one of the educational highlights of 2011 for our members.
Throughout the year we continue to promote our craft by performing for various community events, assisting charitable groups with fundraising, singing in our Annual Show, and spreading holiday cheer via Valograms and Harmony-grams. We have welcomed travelers to the airport during the holiday season and perform at company parties during the year.
As you can see, we are a very active and involved chorus in both our community and our sponsoring organization. Come join the fun!

April Sweet Adeline of the Month: Linda Hayes Linda wasted no time getting back into the swing of chorus life and took on several responsibilities with jewelry and costuming that really put us "in the pink" at regional contest this year! Searching online for just the right chorus shirts and earrings, as well as organizing and coordinating the sizing, ordering, and distribution of these items, Linda was a major factor in getting it all done in time for contest. Here's to a job well done Linda!
March Sweet Adeline of the Month: Michaela Phillips Besides being a great tenor, Michaela has been serving as a liaison between Marianne our Director, and the rest of the chorus, taking care of details that can easily fall through the cracks. She sends reminders, keeps track of coaching notes as well as musical changes; she is our collective memory! Thanks for your good work Michaela!
Capitaland Chorus 2013 Sweet Adeline of the Year: Dodie Gearing In addition to being bass section leader and music library coordinator, Dodie devotes much of her time to making Capitaland Chorus the best it can be! She is there to open and set up the rehearsal hall when needed, participates in sing outs as a solid bass singer, and in general is there to help wherever it is needed. Dodie is a most worthy recipient of this honor for this year, and the chorus extends its gratitude to her for all she does!
